Best ‘Related Posts’ Plugins for WordPress

Overall Best Related Posts Plugin – YARPP

YARPP is probably the most complete and advanced related posts plugin for WordPress. Using a customizable algorithm considering post titles, content, tags, and categories, YARPP calculates a “match score” for each pair of posts on your blog. You choose the threshold limit for relevance and you get more related posts if there are more related posts and less if there are less.

When enabling this plugin you will see a score next to each related post listed, resist the urge to start searching how to remove this score, it is only showed to administrators while logged in, so log out and you should see the related posts listed without the score. It is just there for administration purposes. You can also create custom templates for displaying the related posts, some templates can be found in the plugin directory and should be copied to your site’s theme directory. Within the plugin’s settings page you can also modify the formatting of your related posts list to a certain extent.

If you would like to display image thumbnails together with the YARPP-generated related posts, take a look at these manual solutions:

Related Posts via Tags

Efficient Related Posts is an efficient related posts that uses tags to associate posts. It has caching functionality meaning that the related posts database will be built while editing the content in the backend and not when a user accesses a post on the blog. It has less database queries than YARPP so can be a good alternative if you’re very keen on optimising load speed and don’t mind the simpler algorithm.

This is a quick and dirty manual option that lists 5 posts having the same first tag as the current post. Just drop the following code into your theme’s functions.php file.

//for use in the loop, list 5 post titles related to first tag on current post
$tags = wp_get_post_tags($post->ID);
if ($tags) {
echo ‘Related Posts’;
$first_tag = $tags[0]->term_id;
‘tag__in’ => array($first_tag),
‘post__not_in’ => array($post->ID),
$my_query = new WP_Query($args);
if( $my_query->have_posts() ) {
while ($my_query->have_posts()) : $my_query->the_post(); ?>
<p><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title_attribute(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></p>
