Have you heard of Headway yet? It’s a fantastic drag-and-drop theme framework which lets you build WordPress themes as fast as you can imagine them in your head. As part of my WordPress coaching work I’ve used iThemes builder and Headway when teaching new WordPress users how to create their own themes. Due to the overwhelming positive response to Headway I now use it exclusively, it is just more intuitive for new users and just works without any hitches.
WordPress is not just for complete beginners however. Experienced developers will find that it can be an extremely useful tool for rapidly building prototypes for their clients, or creating the complete theme with Headway. This can be useful for lower-budget clients who just want a neat and functional theme without all the frills and customisations that a bigger brand would need.
When Headway’s visual editor was released, it disrupted how the WordPress community approached designing and building websites. For the first time, you could build a website from scratch and see exactly how it would look – all within the same visual interface.
And now everything is going to change again…
The new version of Headway is scheduled to be released on November 25th, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever before. The staff at Headway have been teasing us with snapshots and videos of the upcoming release, and things look good!
Headway 3.0 will be built on a “block and grid” model which will follow a three step process for creating Page layouts (as you’ll see in the video below):
- Select a grid layout with a specific number of columns and rows, depending upon the complexity your design.
- Visually select a section of the grid with your mouse. This is done by simply selecting a specific section on the grid by mousing over a specific area within the grid
- Select what type of content you want placed within that selection. What to add a second navigation menu halfway down the page? No problem. Want to add featured posts to the right of your header image? No problem.
The other amazing thing that Headway 3.0 will allow you to do is use Child Themes created by theme companies like Organic Themes, Allure Themes and Press 75. This allows people who lack design skills to get a headstart by taking advantage of the design talent already included in these other themes.
I’ve already easily coached total WordPress beginners in creating neat sites in just a few days with previous versions of Headway, so I’m definitely looking forward to the new incarnation of this amazing theme.
