WordPress does come with a default gallery shortcode. While it is a cool feature for basic needs, it may not be enough for some users, especially if you are looking to create a media-intensive site. The customization options are limited and a lot of effort is needed to create something awesome.
After all, there’s so much that can be done with images and a plugin’s functionality coming in the way of your creativity is the worst thing that can happen.
If you are crazy about images and are on a lookout for a great plugin to power your gallery, Grid FX can be your last stop.
And it is not just about displaying images, using Grid FX can take displaying your posts and online stores’ products to a whole new level too.
Grid FX is a powerful plugin that lets you create beautiful image and media galleries within minutes.
It’s easy to assume that having over 80 customization options will make the plugin overwhelming. But I realized during this review, how the logical placements of the options make creating even complex grids a breeze.
What I like best about Grid FX is its neat interface.
There’s a default shortcode but a dynamic shortcode is generated as you start picking your options for customizing.
The plugin is highly intuitive and works straight out of the box.
I’ll walk you through the main sections that you can use to create an image wall with Grid FX.
Within this tab, you can name and add a description to your wall. Grid FX comes with 3 default themes. You can select any one for your grid. You can also pick a font and add your custom CSS here.
This tab lets you create the basic layout of your grid.
One of the biggest challenges in creating grids comes when the images have different dimensions. With Grid FX, you can pre-define a standard height and width. When images greater than these dimensions are found, Grid FX crops the images to match this standard height and width.
Loop and Pagination
Grid FX lets you add a search functionality to your site. You can also add a sorting function. The post types and categories that you want to add to your wall can also be specified here. You can also limit the number of posts to be included in the grid. Also, you can link each image to its post URL.
Grid FX can also be used to create audio and video grids too. If you plan to add audio and video elements to your grids, you’ll have to enable their usage under this section.
Among all the other options, the important ones are being able to add excerpts below the title and over the image. You can compliment your images beautifully by using this feature.
You don’t just get options for defining how the basic layout will look, but you can also define the look for each element when it gets clicked.
I’m using the dark theme and have enabled likes for getting this effect. You can use Grid FX to display your posts elegantly.
If you choose to display your images using the lightbox option, you can customize its look and settings under this tab.
The miscellaneous option lets you define several things like the maximum size of your images and the custom placeholder image.
When you try to configure Grid FX for the first time, you may feel slightly overwhelmed. But if you spend just 15 minutes with the plugin, you can find yourself creating image galleries like a pro.
Grid FX is one of the most powerful options for showcasing the products in your online store.
With WooCommerce integration, Grid FX can be used to showcase your online store products within a particular category. Picking category wise is not the only option. There are other ways too.
Again, Grid FX’s search and drop-down features coupled with beautiful image layouts extend a smooth and seamless experience to the buyers.
There aren’t too many impressive plugins out there for creating smart grids in WordPress. However, you don’t really need to look any further than Grid FX.
